Panope californica
Taxonomy
Panope californica was named by Packard (1922). Its type specimen is UCMP 12292 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCLA loc. 3114, Simi Hills, which is in a Selandian marine horizon in the Santa Susana Formation of California.
It was recombined as Panopea californica by Elder and Miller (1989).

Packard 1922 | Shell short, inequilate ral, tumid, gaping widely posteriorly and little if at all anteriorly; anterior extremity evenly rounded, base broadly arcuate; posterior extremity abruptly truncated; anterior dorsal slope short, slightly concave; posterior dorsal slope long, less oblique than the anterior slope, becoming concave upward toward the anterior end. Umbones prominent; beaks acutely pointed, situated at a point about one-third the distance front the anterior to the posterior end. No lunule; escutcheon ill-defined ancl limited in width by the dorsal edges of the gaping valves . Surface marked by heavy, irregular, incremental lines of growth. Hinge and pallial line unknown. Length of type, 95 mm.; height, 62 mm.; diameter, 45 mm. |
