Compsemys imbricarius was named by Cope (1876). Its type specimen is AMNH 6102, a partial shell (three shell fragments), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Basilemys imbricaria by Hay (1908); it was recombined as Basilemys imbricarius by Hay (1902) and Hay (1930).
