Diomedeoides was named by Fischer (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Diomedeoididae.

It was assigned to Diomedeoididae by Mayr et al. (2002); to Procellariidae by Mlikovsky (2002); and to Procellariiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
