Pelecanoides was named by Lacépède (1799) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Procellariiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Pelecanoididae by Olson (1985), Carroll (1988), Scofield et al. (2006), Worthy et al. (2007); and to Procellariidae by Worthy (1997), Worthy and Grant-Mackie (2003), Clements et al. (2017).
