Tytthostonyx was named by Olson and Parris (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Tytthostonyx glauconiticus. It is the type genus of Tytthostonychidae.

It was assigned to Tytthostonychidae by Olson and Parris (1987); and to Procellariiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
