Taxonomy
Waimanu tuatahi was named by Slack et al. (2006) [name attributed to Ando, Jones and Fordyce]. Its type specimen is OU 12651, a partial skeleton (associated part skeleton with skull fragments, incomplete mandible, cervical vertebrae, ribs, synsacrum, furcula, coracoids, anterior right scapula, right humer), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Waipara River M34/fl138, which is in a Selandian/Thanetian marine horizon in the Waipara Greensand Formation of New Zealand.
It was recombined as Muriwaimanu tuatahi by Mayr et al. (2017), Mayr et al. (2020) and Robinson et al. (2024).
