Cataceramus was named by Cox (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant K Maes].

It was reranked as Inoceramus (Cataceramus) by Kennedy et al. (1973).

It was assigned to Inoceramus by Kennedy et al. (1973); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Inoceramidae by Vokes (1980) and Alencáster and Omaña (2006).
