Petralca was named by Mlikovsky (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Petralcinae.

It was assigned to Petralcinae by Mlikovsky (1987); to Alcidae by Mlikovsky (2002); to Charadriiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Gaviidae by Wijnker and Olson (2009); and to Gaviiformes by Gölich and Mayr (2018).
