Taxonomy
Balaenotus was named by Van Beneden (1872) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 746].

It was synonymized subjectively with Balaena by Lydekker (1887); it was reranked as Balaena (Balaenotus) by Newton (1891); it was synonymized subjectively with Balaenula by McKenna and Bell (1997); it was considered a nomen nudum by Whitmore and Kaltenbach (2008).

It was assigned to Balaena by Newton (1891); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Balaenidae by Palmer (1904), Kellogg (1928), Simpson (1945), Pilleri (1987), Carroll (1988), Bisconti (2003), Uhen et al. (2008), Cioppi (2014), Field et al. (2017).
