Taxonomy
Brachydelphis was named by Muizon (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Brachydelphis mazeasi. It was considered monophyletic by Geisler et al. (2011).
It was assigned to Brachydelphinae by de Muizon (1988), Muizon (1988), Cozzuol (1996) and Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Platanistoidea by Geisler and Sanders (2003) and Gutstein et al. (2009); to Brachydelphidae by Cozzuol (2010); to Inioidea by Geisler et al. (2011); and to Pontoporiidae by Benton (1993), McKenna and Bell (1997), Hamilton et al. (2001), Geisler et al. (2012), Marx et al. (2016) and Berta (2017).
