Taxonomy
Neophanomys pristinus was named by Verzi et al. (2011). Its type specimen is GHUNLPam 5040, a mandible (right mandibular fragment with Dp4-m3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Estancia Don Mariano, which is in a Huayquerian terrestrial siltstone in the Cerro Azul Formation of Argentina.
