Taxonomy
Neophanomys recens was named by Verzi et al. (2011). Its type specimen is GHUNLPam 19602, a mandible (left mandibular fragment with intra-alveolar portion of incisor and m1-3.), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Caleufú, which is in a Messinian loess siltstone in the Cerro Azul Formation of Argentina.
