Idiocetus was named by Capellini (1876) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi T Plio-u]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Oishi and Hasegawa (1995).
It was synonymized subjectively with Plesiocetus by True (1912).
It was assigned to Balaenopteridae by Matsumoto (1926), Kellogg (1928), Kellogg (1931), Simpson (1945), Pilleri (1987), Carroll (1988); to Balaenopterinae by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Cetotheriidae by Oishi and Hasegawa (1995), Whitmore and Barnes (2008); and to Balaenidae by Palmer (1904), Churchill et al. (2007), Steeman (2010), Cioppi (2014), Marx et al. (2016), Berta (2017).
