Imerocetus was named by Mchedlidze (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Goldin and Startsev (2014).
It was assigned to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cetotheriidae by Mchedlidze (1964), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Whitmore and Barnes (2008), Goldin and Startsev (2014), Berta (2017).
