Tetrao canadensis was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Canachites canadensis by Wetmore (1962); it was recombined as Dendragapus canadensis by Eshelman and Grady (1986); it was recombined as Falcipennis canadensis by Clements et al. (2017).
