Taxonomy
Tetrao phasianellus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Pediocaetes.

It was recombined as Pediocaetes phasianellus by Hay (1902), Shufeldt (1915) and Wetmore (1940); it was recombined as Pedioecetes phasianellus by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1956) and Wetmore (1962); it was recombined as Tympanuchus phasianellus by Clements et al. (2017).
