Platylithax was named by Kellogg (1931) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m]. It is not extant. Its type is Platylithax robusta.
It was assigned to Delphinidae by Kellogg (1931) and Simpson (1945); to Odontoceti by Barnes (1977) and Carroll (1988); to Autoceta by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Delphinoidea by de Muizon (1988) and Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Delphinida by Uhen et al. (2008); and to Odontoceti by Gagnaison et al. (2009).
