It was recombined as Botaurus lentiginosus by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1931), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Howard (1946), Wetmore (1956), Emslie (1992), Broughton (2004), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Clements et al. (2017).
