Protodelphinus was named by Dal Piaz (1916) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Delphinidae by Dal Piaz (1916), Kellogg (1928), Dal Piaz (1929), Simpson (1945), Pilleri (1985) and Carroll (1988); to Odontoceti by Muizon (1990); to Autoceta by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Eurhinodelphinoidea by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Delphinoidea by Lambert (2005).
