Ardea thula was named by Molina (1782). It is extant.

It was recombined as Leucophoyx thula by Wetmore (1956) and Ligon (1966); it was recombined as Egretta thula by Wetmore (1931), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017).
