Taxonomy
Tetrao californicus was named by Shaw (1798). It is extant. It is the type species of Lophortyx.

It was recombined as Lophortyx californica by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942) and Langenwalter (1975); it was recombined as Lophortyx californicus by Wetmore (1956); it was recombined as Callipepla californica by Broughton (2004), Guthrie (2010) and Clements et al. (2017).
