Turdus fuscatus was named by Vieillot (1808). It is extant.

It was recombined as Margarops fuscatus by Wetmore (1922), Wetmore (1937), Pregill et al. (1988), Olson et al. (1990), Reis and Steadman (1999), Clements et al. (2017).
