Ziphiodelphis was named by Dal Piaz (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Lambert (2005).
It was assigned to Delphinidae by Kellogg (1928); to Ziphiidae by Dal Piaz (1929); to Rhabdosteidae by Myrick (1979), Carroll (1988), Benton (1993), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Eurhinodelphidae by Simpson (1945), Pilleri (1985), Muizon (1988), Muizon (1990), Lambert (2005); and to Eurhinodelphinidae by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Bianucci and Landini (2002), Fornasiero and Del Vavero (2014), Godfrey et al. (2017), Berta (2017).
