Indosiren was named by von Koenigswald (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. Its type is Indosiren javanense.

It was assigned to Sirenia by von Koenigswald (1952); to Sirenia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dugongidae by Carroll (1988), Domning (1996), Berta (2017).
