Paralitherium was named by Kordos (1977) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u]. Its type is Paralitherium tarkanyense.

It was assigned to Sirenia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dugongidae by Domning (1996), Berta (2017).
