Taxonomy
Picus pileatus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Ceophloeus (Phloeotomus) pileatus by Wetmore (1940); it was recombined as Ceophloeus pileatus by Miller and DeMay (1942); it was recombined as Dryocopus pileatus by Wetmore (1956), Clements et al. (2017).
