Taxonomy
Ortyx picta was named by Douglas (1829). It is extant. It is the type species of Oreortyx.

It was recombined as Oreortyx picta by Hay (1930), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Eo et al. (2009); it was recombined as Oreortyx pictus by Wetmore (1956), Clements et al. (2017).
