Taxonomy

Picus superciliaris was named by Temminck (1827). It is extant.

It was recombined as Centurus superciliaris by Wetmore (1937); it was recombined as Melanerpes superciliaris by Olson and Hilgartner (1982), Olson et al. (1990), Clements et al. (2017), Oswald and Steadman (2018).

Synonyms

Bathoceleus hyphalus was named by Brodkorb (1959). Its type specimen is UF 3209, a set of postcrania (right coracoid), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Banana Hole (UF collection), which is in a Pleistocene/Holocene sinkhole limestone in the Bahamas.

It was synonymized subjectively with Melanerpes superciliaris by Olson and Hilgartner (1982).
