Taxonomy
Butorides mauritianus was named by Newton and Gadow (1893). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mare aux Songes swamp (Sauzier collection), which is in a Holocene mire/swamp peat in Mauritius.
It was recombined as Nycticorax mauritianus by Hume (2013).
