Onchiodon was named by Geinitz (1861). Its type is Onchiodon labyrinthicus.

| J. Boy 1990 | Postorbital part of skull short. Back side of skull concave, with broad occipetal lammella ("Occipetallamelle"). Skull show strong widening in the adult stage (IOw, jugal, snout). Connection on the surface beween praefrontal and jugal first appers in juvenile stage. Lacrimale stays in contact with very short septomaxilla. Praefrontal elongated and in frontal part broader. - Choana broad and round. Behind the pair of canine tooth no futher teeth on platinum and ectopterygoid. Pairs of palate-pits (german: "Gaumengruben") on praemaxilla-vomer. Distinctive transverse process of pterygoid. Arteria carotis interna runs in the parasphenoid basal plate and comes out at the frontal border. Furrow of palatine branch of nervus V unclear. - Teeth of the jaws differentiated. Flat surangular-process. - Ribs with strong hook-shaped processi. Ilium vertical and dorsal widened. Spindle-shaped ventral scales. |
