Catharista occidentalis was named by Miller (1909). Its type specimen is UCMP 12509, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Coragyps occidentalis by Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Miller and DeMay (1942) and Wetmore (1956).
