Rallus arenarius was named by Milne-Edwards (1891). It is the type species of Quercyrallus.

It was recombined as Quercyrallus arenarius by Lambrecht (1933), Brodkorb (1952), Brodkorb (1967), Olson (1977) and Mlikovsky (2002).
