Powellvenator podocitus
Taxonomy
Powellvenator podocitus was named by Ezcurra (2017). Its type specimen is PVL 4414-1, a set of postcrania (distal end of tibia and fibula, astra- galus, calcaneum, distal tarsals 3 and 4, proximal ends of metatarsals II–IV, and most of metatarsal V from the right hin), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Quebrada de los Jachaleros, which is in a Norian fluvial-lacustrine siliciclastic in the Los Colorados Formation of Argentina.

Ezcurra 2017 | Powellvenator podocitus is a small-sized early neotheropod that differs from other avemetatarsalians in the following combination of character-states in the holo- type PVL 4414-1 (autapomorphies indicated with an asterisk): tibia lacking an anterior diagonal tuberosity and a notch for reception of a posteromedial process on the astragalus; astragalus with an ascending process lower than the astragalar body, distinctly sigmoid (medially convex and laterally concave) posterodorsal margin*, and a rounded, dorsally projected expansion on the medial third of the dorsal margin of the bone in anterior view*; calcaneum with a laterally projected flange that occupies the entire proximodistal height of its anterolateral corner*; distal tarsal 3 with a convex anterolateral margin in proximal view*; distal tarsal 4 with a strongly convex anterior margin in proximal view; shaft of metatarsal II less than half the anteroposterior depth and transverse width of the shaft of metatarsal III*; and metatarsal III without overlap of the posteromedial surface of metatarsal IV. |
