Apus ignotus was named by Paris (1912).

It was recombined as Cypseloides ignotus by Milne-Edwards (1871); it was recombined as Cypselus ignotus by Lambrecht (1933); it was recombined as Procypseloides ignotus by Harrison (1984), Mlikovsky (2002) and Mourer-Chauviré et al. (2004).
