Trucheosaurus was named by Watson (1956). Its type is Bothriceps major.
It was assigned to Brachyopidae by Carroll (1988); to Peltosteginae by Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Rhytidosteidae by Marsicano and Warren (1998) and Poropat et al. (2023).
