Plagiosuchus was named by Huene (1922). It was considered monophyletic by Damiani et al. (2009).
It was assigned to Plagiosauridae by Kuhn (1971), Carroll (1988), Damiani et al. (2009) and Schoch (2013); and to Plagiosuchinae by Schoch and Milner (2014).
