Protaspis brevirostris was named by Bryant (1933). Its type specimen is PU 13646, a partial skeleton (A dorsal shield in yellow limestone), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Protaspis (Protaspis) bucheri by Denison (1970).
