Taxonomy
Stephanospondylus was named by Stappenbeck (1905). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Stephanospondylidae.

It was assigned to Stephanospondylidae by Kuhn (1966); to Diadectidae by Carroll et al. (1972) and Carroll (1988); and to Bolosauridae by Ivakhnenko (2008).
