Taxonomy
Stephanoaetus mahery was named by Goodman (1994). Its type specimen is MNHN MAD 5491, a limb element (left tarsometatarsus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ampasambazimba, which is in a Pleistocene/Holocene mire/swamp horizon in Madagascar.
