Scutosaurus was named by Hartmann-Weinberg (1930). It is not extant. Its type is Pareiosaurus karpinskii.
It was assigned to Pareiasauria by Lee (1997); and to Pareiasauridae by Hartmann-Weinberg (1930), Efremov (1940), Carroll (1988), Lee (2000) and Ivakhnenko (2008).
