Proterochersis was named by Fraas (1913). It is the type genus of Proterochersidae.
It was assigned to Pleurodira by de la Fuente and Iturralde-Vinent (2001); to Testudines by Kuhn (1971), Joyce et al. (2004); to Testudinata by Joyce (2007), Danilov and Parham (2008), Anquetin (2012), Pérez-García and Murelaga (2013), Perea et al. (2014), Joyce (2017); and to Proterochersidae by Carroll (1988), Gaffney et al. (2006), Szczygielski and Sulej (2016), Czepiński et al. (2021).
