Taxonomy
Pelomedusa was named by Wagler (1830). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pelomedusinae.
It was assigned to Pelomedusinae by Zangerl (1948); to Pleurodira by Joyce (2007); to Panpleurodira by Anquetin et al. (2009); to Pelomedusoides by Cadena et al. (2012); and to Pelomedusidae by Carroll (1988), Frank and Ramus (1996), Gaffney et al. (2006), Burney et al. (2008), van Dijk et al. (2014).
