Manchurochelys was named by Endo and Shikama (1942).
It was assigned to Macrobaenidae by Sukhanov (2000) and Parham and Hutchison (2003); to Sinemydidae by Yeh (1963), Kuhn (1966), Carroll (1988), Brinkman et al. (2008), Zhou (2010) and Zhou and Wang (2010); and to Sinemydidae by Zhou et al. (2014) and Zhou and Rabi (2015).
