Asaphus (Platypeltis) was named by Callaway (1877). Its type is Asaphus (Platypeltis) croftii.

It was replaced with Platypeltoides by Prantl and Pribyl (1949) and Jell and Adrain (2002).

It was assigned to Asaphus by Callaway (1877).
