Taxonomy
Gerrhosaurus was named by Wiegmann (1828). It is extant. It is the type genus of Gerrhosauridae.

It was assigned to Cordylidae by Estes (1983) and Carroll (1988); and to Gerrhosauridae by Kuhn (1966) and Pyron et al. (2013).
