Taxonomy
Scolecophidia was named by Duméril and Bibron (1844). It is extant. It was considered unknown by Mead (2013).

It was reranked as the suborder Scolecophidia by Cope (1871), Cope (1875), Rage (1984); it was synonymized subjectively with Typhlopoidea by Kuhn (1966); it was reranked as the unranked clade Scolecophidia by Augé and Rage (2006), Mead (2013).

It was assigned to Ophidia by Cope (1871), Cope (1875); to Serpentes by Wilcox et al. (2002), Augé and Rage (2006), Longrich et al. (2012), Palci et al. (2013); to Serpentes by Rage (1984), Carroll (1988), Vidal and Hedges (2002), Venczel and Stiuca (2008), Mead (2013); and to Serpentes by Mead and Steadman (2017).
