Simosaurinae was named by Nopcsa (1928).

It was reranked as the family Simosauridae by Huene (1948), Young (1965), Kuhn (1966), Kuhn (1971), Carroll (1988), Rieppel (2000).

It was assigned to Pachypleuridae by Nopcsa (1928); to Pachypleurosauridae by Nopsca (1928); to Plesiosauria by Huene (1948); to Pachypleurosauroidea by Young (1965); to Nothosauria by Kuhn (1966); to Nothosaurida by Kuhn (1971); to Nothosauria by Carroll (1988); and to Simosauria by Rieppel (2000).
