Rhynchosaurus was named by Owen (1842). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Rhynchosauridae.
It was assigned to Lacertilia by Owen (1842); to Saurii by Meyer (1845); to Lacertinidae by d'Orbigny (1849); to Cryptodontia by Owen (1859); to Cryptodontia by Owen (1861); to Rhynchosaurinae by Benton (1985); to Rhynchosauridae by Cope (1871), Cope (1875), Carroll (1988) and Mukherjee and Ray (2015); and to Rhynchosauridae by Ezcurra et al. (2016).
