Sphinctonella was named by Hurcewicz (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 941]. It is not extant. Its type is Sphinctonella trestiani.
It was assigned to Sphaerocoelida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sphaerocoeliidae by Finks et al. (2004).
