Stagonolepis was named by Agassiz (1844).

It was assigned to Thecodontia by Owen (1861); to Parasuchia by Dollo (1883); to Phytosauridae by Watson (1917); to Stagonolepinae by Huene (1942); to Aetosauridae by Charig (1967); to Stagonolepininae by Heckert and Lucas (2000), Heckert and Lucas (2002); to Stagonolepididae by Carroll (1988), Parrish (1993), Long and Murry (1995), Heckert and Lucas (1999), Irmis (2005); to Aetosaurinae by Parker (2007); to Stagonolepidae by Huene (1922), Sulej (2010); and to Desmatosuchia by Parker (2016).

Synonyms

Ebrachosaurus was named by Kuhn (1936).

It was synonymized subjectively with Stagonolepis by Desojo et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Parasuchia by Kuhn (1936); to Thecodontia by Kuhn (1964), Kuhn (1971); to Stagnolepididae by Carroll (1988); and to Aetosauria by Hunt and Lucas (1991).
